Martens remarks that they are like the cartilaginous bones of a shark — resilient but strong. They wander in and out of the movie to provide some cute commentary and make googly eyes as Svend. Hell, I think he was about to go supercritical and take out all of Copenhagen himself. They have it laid out on a table in another room, the temperature within kept at freezing levels. Svend strolls into view and asks what is so unusual about them. We all know the answer to that one. Brandt points out that such a plan will require firing point blank at very close range.
In my mind the show was fragment of an era that was gone. According to Grayson, Reptilicus cannot leave the area without them knowing about it. Well I have to say that Reptilicus is a movie that provides plenty of material for Jonah and the bots to work with. Well, Reptilicus has had other ideas: namely to attack the Danish Stock Exchange! Luckily Svend and Grayson have driven to the bridge, rush up the tower and take over the controls from the operator who is cowered against a wall with his hands over his eyes!!! All in all, a by the numbers giant monster outing. I've only seen the theatrical cut, but I'm interesting in seeing that working cut on the blu-ray. In fact, he was supposedly a popular comedian in Denmark, which helps explain his slap-stick performance in this film.
With that, the four of them are out the door. Dalby enters with another man and introduces him to Grayson as Captain Brandt, his liaison with Danish forces. All of a sudden we are at the beach, where a kid passing through the shot nearly trips while looking straight into the camera. That was fascinating and very detailed almost as long as the film itself. Oswald looks a natural for his part.
It proved to be only a moderate hit, but like so many other films of the same caliber from those years, it found a second life on late-night television. Then one reporter asks what they are calling the specimen. He looks to be marionette controlled, and this renders his movement wobbly and inconstant. She calls attention to it and they all run over to take a look. This information is relayed to General Grayson, who quickly orders all units to fire at will. For the most annoying examples of this padding, we must turn to the character of Peterson and his odious comic relief.
It is a very funny tune and actually an earworm, so be warned you might find yourself humming it hours later. I suppose one heart attack per film is enough for him. Jonah and Baron have very similar voices. Gesturing with the telegram, he references the bones mentioned therein and says that maybe these will be the fragments they need in order to complete piecing them all together. While dancing around in supposed pain, he hears a strange rumbling coming from the room where the Reptilicus tail sits in a tank.
In that respect, he is like my dad — capable of sleeping peacefully through nuclear war. Part of this is the voice quality of the actors. The place has better weather than Southern California! To return to some place, you would have to have been there at least once before. Grayson says that they can just pick of the pieces, as so many component parts will be easier to deal with that one large animal. The crew chief, Svend, examines a fresh core sample and his hand comes away covered in blood. They go up and down faster than Monica Lewinsky in the oval office.
What role is Svend playing? Inside the tank, the water is bubbling around the Reptilicus tail and soon we see a complete foot begin to move around. It is a bit more of a problem in the theater. While drilling for minerals in the hinterlands of Denmark, Svend Bent Mejding and his crew come upon some strange flesh and blood on the drill bit. Have they already forgotten that each bit of Reptilicus will grow into a new monster? Dalby is a bit more excited about the find. He runs around and does a lot of stupid stuff including sticking his hand into an electric-eel exhibit. Grayson spends the last parts of the movie whining, bitching and crying about how he has no effective weapons.
I told you that foot was going to come back to bite them all in the ass! Dalby is working at his desk. Peterson says ok and then leaves. What in the hell has he been doing? Who handed this moron a degree in paleontology? He gets up and unlocks the door to the refrigeration room. Long about now the phone rings. The second half of the film, which is comprised mostly of the main characters trying to locate and kill the beast while dealing with the death and destruction it is causing, is far more recognizable as a monster film.
He goes to take a drink and then thinks better of it and places the cup back on the desk. Kinga and Max discuss the experiment and Max gets to push the button. Review Reptilicus was the brainchild of Sidney Pink, who had provided American International Pictures with the successful The Angry Red Planet in 1959. He is doing his best, but man, Reptilicus is one hell of an adversary. Even the citizens of Copenhagen turned out by the thousands to be extras in the film.
