However, trying to 'fix' the old install is going to prove to be hairy, as you'll need to be booted into that old install to actually do fixes, unless you can somehow load registry settings and find the drivers manually. No need to muck around in there right now. Then all of a sudden one day the keyboard and the mouse stopped responding after I started the computer. It is not my computer so I don't know what may have occured; although I think windows updated several times over the last few days. This acer has me mad! If possible, try to use them on another computer. Well Linux works fine and but people reading here need windows help. I was really lucky because I had just installed a program the day before and Windows created a restore point for me automatically.
Please try the steps in reply 13 and post the result. The keyboard can be used to select safe mode. When I came in to work this morning my mouse was not working. And I can verify both of these work because I took them from another techs machine for a little bit. I had the a couple of years ago.

Please download and install the drivers listed below. The battery took more than one night to be up at full power. If not, continue the reading. What I am trying to say is it might be a hardware problem and it would be nice to be able to rule that out. By default, it will pick one for you, but you can choose a different one if you like. Windows shows the usual message that devices were found and it searches for drivers, founds the drivers and the devices are ready for use. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended. This method has worked for other users who run into this problem like you. It should not lose files unless you create some account that was the same as the old account names but you did your backups. I think that its even worse that none of the Microsoft people who presumably moderate these forums have been bothered to join the conversation.
