By this time, she's a medical resident in L. Overall, better than I was expecting it to be. Rashida Jones and Jason Segel are also hilarious as a lovey dovey couple in a movie within the movie. Leave your hand off and I move. I had never seen such beautiful eyes.
What is most fascinating about this movie is that it's a raunchy rom-com from the female perspective. He realises he loved her all along and puts together a big stunt to win her back. The spunk comes naturally to her, as does the vulnerability underlying her tough exterior. Both of them are career-oriented, emotionally stunted individuals who are sick of the complications that come with being in relationships which we see in the hilarious opening montage of Jamie and Dylan breaking up with their crazy significant others. Between No Strings Attached, Hall Pass, and Friends With Benefits, it seems relationships are out and emotion-free fornication is in. Timberlake, for the record, is great in his role, too. You have nothing to feel insecure.
Friends With Benefits also succeeds because its raunchy humour and cultural references are relatable. . Knowing that the film was written by a woman prior to my viewing it made the nuances jump out to me. Every scene featuring Harrelson is hysterical — he nails the gay jokes without crossing the line into offensive territory. No one scene or moment merits more then a minor chuckle but the characters themselves expand and grow as the story unfolds.
You could remove the tension between the two. Narrow your hands and follow with your life. Natalie Portman is great as many would expect but Ashton Kutcher did a fine job as well. Other subtle winks and nudges — such as a sneaky reference to another Screen Gems film, Easy A — keeps the audience engaged, drawing attention away from the straightforward plot and relatively clumsy handling of the dramatic moments. It's hard to care about the leads at first because there's no set up or real establishment of character.
Then, they kind of grow on you even though neither really rang true for me in any real world sense. It's those nuances and that perspective that make the film enjoyable. Sometime after that, Dylan takes Jamie home to meet his family, but she leaves, heartbroken, when she overhears him telling his sister that he could never be interested in her as anything more than a friend. A prescription for fun or for disaster? When he discovers that an ex-girlfriend is living with his dad, he gets drunk, calls every woman in his cell phone contact list, and ends up passed out naked in her living room. Occasionally in the 15 years since summer camp, Adam and Emma cross paths. I've seen others criticizing his performance but I think that's based on a pre-determined hatred of him rather than on his work. She shines so brightly in her role that we forgive the lukewarm chemistry between her and Timberlake.
